9.2 NAPs, Peace and Conflict: Aligning Conflict-Sensitive NAPs with Peacebuilding Processes (NAP GN)

As in situations of active conflict, prioritizing climate change action in peacebuilding contexts can be difficult. However, the close links between climate change and fragility mean that it would be a mistake to ignore medium- and long-term adaptation needs in these peacebuilding contexts.

This session will focus on how governments operating in peacebuilding contexts can design and implement their NAP process in a way that responds to peace and conflict dynamics. It will draw on the experiences of developing country governments in initiating and implementing NAP processes in contexts of fragility and will introduce recent guidance developed by IISD/NAP Global Network on how to both align NAPs with peacebuilding agendas and how to ensure that NAPs are conflict-sensitive. It will be centered around discussions with conflict-affected governments on the types of support – technical, financial, informational, and other – they need to effectively push forward their NAP processes in a way that supports peace and development.
